Surveying Goma’s Volcanoes

Scientists are working to assess the risk of a volcanic eruption after lava from Mount Nyiragongo forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is the crater of the Nyamuragira volcano, which is the one beside Nyiragongo, very active. And just come up here with some volcanologists to take a look at the activity in and around the crater, because there was some concern that this volcano was also at risk of erupting after last week. The crater over here is actually busy disintegrating into the depths of the lake while we’re up here. I’m not going to go too close to the edge, but that’s it over there.
