Shane Warne roasts Nathan Lyon over tactical blunder

Australian spin-bowling legend Shane Warne has roasted Nathan Lyon over the fields set by the off-spinner on day five of the fourth Test against India.

Lyon has operated on the final morning without a close-in fielder on the off-side when bowling to Cheteshwar Pujuara, bowling a line that’s too straight for Warne’s liking.

As Lyon searched for the elusive breakthrough, Warne couldn’t hide his frustration.

“I just cannot believe it, after everything with the last series and this series and how he has bowled to Pujara with a bat-pad on the off-side, he looks a completely different player,” Warne said on Fox Cricket.

“What sort of conversations have they had with no bat-pad to start with this morning? I’m in shock.

“I’ve been disappointed with some of the tactics from the Australians this series, but this doesn’t make any sense whatsoever as well.”

Warne noted that Lyon, who has bowled more balls to Pujara in Test cricket than any other bowler, should have learned from the past.

“I don’t have an answer, I just cannot explain why he hasn’t got one,” he said.

“Here’s a guy who has played 100 Tests, he has bowled enough balls to Pujara, he knows how he has got him out on the off-side with a bat-pad, he knows how it changes his game, so why on earth would you not have one?”

Warne also revealed he’d spoken to Lyon about employing a close catcher on the off-side to Pujara, noting that the tactic worked earlier in the series.

“I can’t come up with a reason, because there isn’t one for not having a bat-pad on the off-side,” he said.

“I’d like to think I know a little bit about spin bowling, and I was quite successful at it. I’ve watched Nathan Lyon for a long period of time, and chatted to Lyon about the bat-pad on the off-side to Pujara.

“He says he feels he can’t bowl as wide. Then he put him in in Adelaide and he knocked him over, and he (Pujara) looked a completely different player, and he (Lyon) said, ‘Yep, you’re right’

“So why does he not have one today? That’s what I don’t understand. He knows it works. He’s admitted it works.”
