Brisbane Lions defeat Fremantle, goal umpire’s hilarious act of courage, Joe Daniher

The incredible courage shown by a goal umpire has caught the eye of a number of AFL legends in the Brisbane Lions’ win over Fremantle on Sunday.

Fremantle fought valiantly in the second half, but were left to rue their poor opening to the game as Brisbane ran out 14. 11. (95) to 10. 11. (71) winners at the Gabba.

The Dockers came home with a wet sail, kicking three goals to two in the final quarter, including a long-range effort from ruckman Sean Darcy.

As Darcy unloaded from 50m, while his kick appeared on line, it was also in danger of dropping short as Fremantle’s forwards attempted to shepherd it through while Brisbane’s defenders attempted to spoil.

However, in the middle of a four-man pack on the goal line was the goal umpire, who grappled with the players to maintain prime position to make his decision.

Lions star Joe Daniher even attempted to climb on the umpire’s shoulders in his attempt to spoil the ball, leaving Bulldogs great Brad Johnson in stitches.

“That will go straight into the pool room for the goal umpire,” Johnson laughed. “That is brilliant, what a shot.

“Joe’s used him as a step ladder to try and spoil the ball. Well done, well done. That is awesome. He just stepped left when he should have stepped right.”

“Those eyes did not leave the ball. They were staring eyes,” former Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy added.

“That is great … the goal umpire has stolen the show.”

In the absence of Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale, Jarryd Lyons (29 disposals) and Hugh McCluggage (27 disposals) were brilliant again for the Lions in the win, while Fremantle’s efforts were led by Andrew Brayshaw (28 disposals) and skipper Nat Fyfe (27 disposals).

Brisbane will aim to continue its good form in Round Nine in the annual Q-clash against the Suns in the Gold Coast, while Fremantle will travel to Melbourne to take on Essendon at Marvel Stadium.
