AFL news | Essendon’s Nik Cox to win Rising Star Award despite baffling nomination snub, Matthew Lloyd says

Essendon’s Nik Cox will win the Rising Star Award despite a baffling nomination snub through the first 10 rounds of the season, Bombers legend Matthew Lloyd says.

Cox, the 200cm No.8 draft pick, was again impressive as Essendon beat West Coast on Saturday night; a win that pushed the Bombers into the top eight.

He may finally get a Rising Star nod after the outing and Lloyd reckons he may well win the rookie gong.

“I think it’s amazing that at Round 11 … I think he’s the best player of the season in terms of all these names, [yet] has still not been nominated,” Lloyd said on The Sunday Footy Show.

“I think he wins it. I think [Errol] Gulden and [Braeden] Campbell and [Chad] Warner, the first three, they’ve dropped off. [Lachie] Sholl he’s got covered.

“I know Luke Jackson may be a star but he’s had a better season than him. Harrison Jones [also].

“It’s amazing … he has to get it and I still think he’d be my favourite to win it.”
